Flat feet
In a child's first few years of life, flat feet (pes planus) where the inside edge of the foot is entirely in contact with the ground surface when standing, is completely normal. This flat appearance is due to fatty tissue within the foot, flexible joints, a lack of defined foot muscles and muscle strength, and because many of the foot bones will not be fully formed for years to come. At around 6 years of age, a child's arches should be present.
If your child's flat feet are concerning you, if they are in pain, experiencing problems walking or standing, or if they are not keeping up physically with other children of a similar age then don't hesitate to make a booking with one of our caring podiatrists today.
If required there are many treatment options that may help such as correct footwear choices, orthotic therapy, strengthening/stretching programs, and foot mobilisation.
