Sever's disease
Sever's disease (calcaneal apophysitis) is the painful inflammation of the growth plate within the heel bone of growing children. It is more likely to occur in very active kids, those that participate in sports where they are wearing shoes with thin soles (footy, soccer) or bare feet (karate, dance).
Sever's disease is self limiting in that the pain will stop once the child has grown and the growth plate naturally closes. Prior to this there are many treatments that our podiatrists may implement including stretching and exercise regimes, footwear modification, heel lifts, and orthoses.
